The History of INSIGHTS

INSIGHTS Intervention, LLC was founded in 2011 by Dr. Sandee McClowry to adapt and disseminate NEW INSIGHTS into Children’s Temperament (INSIGHTS), a social and emotional learning intervention. Dr. McClowry first developed INSIGHTS in 1996 while a faculty member at New York University (NYU).

INSIGHTS is an evidence-based intervention with parenting, teacher, and primary grade classroom programs. INSIGHTS teaches adults that differences in children’s behavior, attention, and perceptions are often related to their temperaments/personalities. Children also learn that individuals differ in their responses to daily life situations based on their temperaments. The intervention features four empirically derived temperaments as exemplars. They are from left to right: Fredrico the Friendly who is social and eager to try, Coretta the Cautious who is shy, Gregory the Grumpy who is high maintenance, and Hilary the Hard Worker who is industrious. Actors depict the characters in professionally- made videos in the adult programs. Puppets portray the temperaments in the children’s programs.

Meet the Kids

The development and testing of INSIGHTS has been funded with over $15 million dollars in federal funding. The efficacy of INSIGHTS was first tested in New York City in three federally funded randomized clinical trials with Dr. McClowry as the principal investigator. The first two studies were funded by the National Institutes of Health. A third clinical trial was funded by the Institute of Education Science. The Institute also funded a long-term efficacy study and a replication clinical trial in rural Nebraska.

In 2019, Dr. McClowry retired from NYU as Professor Emerita in order to focus on the mission of the company. Dr. McClowry has a license from NYU to adapt and disseminate INSIGHTS through INSIGHTS Intervention, LLC.

Currently, the company offers multifaceted services that teach educators, clinicians, and parents how to use the INSIGHTS strategies to enhance the relationships they have with children and to expand their repertoire of responsive child behavioral strategies. Children learn related strategies to enhance their own self-regulation.

Both individual and group services are provided at the company headquarters and in hybrid formats with self-paced lessons and online facilitated sessions.  INSIGHTS has been conducted in a number of communities including New York City and State, Nebraska, Iowa, North Carolina, Connecticut, Nova Scotia, and Jamaica.
